What is AQL inspection for eyewear?

Update Time:2026/11/6

AQL inspection for eyewear is the statistical sampling method used to decide whether a finished shipment passes or fails. Instead of checking every frame, the inspector draws a random sample sized by the lot quantity, grades every defect found as critical, major, or minor, and compares the counts against acceptance limits agreed in your contract. The result is an objective accept, reject, or rework decision that both sides can trust.

How an AQL Inspection Runs Step by Step

  1. Define the lot: the shipment quantity is confirmed, and an inspection level from the ANSI/ISO 2859-1 tables sets how many frames get sampled.
  2. Draw the sample: frames are selected at random from finished, packed or nearly packed goods, not from a curated carton.
  3. Grade every defect: critical defects make the frame unsafe or unsellable, major defects would trigger a customer return, minor defects are small cosmetic issues.
  4. Compare and decide: if defects exceed the agreed acceptance numbers for each class, the lot is rejected or reworked; otherwise it ships.
  5. Record the evidence: the report logs photos, defect counts, and the sampled cartons so both sides see the same data.

Defect Classes in Plain Language

ClassTypical eyewear examplesImpact
CriticalSharp edges, broken hinge, lens shatter riskLot fails immediately
MajorVisible scratch, misaligned temple, coating defectsCounts toward rejection limit
MinorSmall marks hidden in wear, slight color shiftCounts at a looser limit

The exact acceptance numbers, usually written as AQL values in the purchase contract, decide how strict each class is. Tightening them improves outgoing quality but raises rework cost, so set them with your supplier before mass production, not after.

AQL sampling is statistical: it reduces risk but cannot guarantee a defect-free lot. Combine it with in-line process checks during production for the best control.
