What certifications should an eyewear manufacturer have?

Update Time:2026/11/6

A trustworthy eyewear manufacturer should hold ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management, a social compliance audit such as Sedex/SMETA or BSCI, and current product test reports covering CE, EN ISO 12312-1, ANSI Z80.3, and material safety. The certificates alone prove little, though, so you also need to verify they are genuine, in date, and issued for the factory you are actually buying from.

The Core Certification Checklist

Certificate / auditWhat it provesHow to verify
ISO 9001Documented quality management across productionAsk for the certificate number and scope, check validity on the certification body's database
ISO 14001Environmental management of the siteSame check; confirm the scope covers the actual factory address
Sedex/SMETA or BSCISocial compliance and working conditionsRequest the audit report date, CAP status, and platform membership code
CE + EN ISO 12312-1Sunglasses meet EU PPE and UV/transmittance rulesMatch the report to your lens category and model
Product test reportsANSI Z80.3, nickel release, REACH, FDA registration for US salesAsk for reports issued per material and program, not generic samples

How to Spot a Certificate That Does Not Hold Up

  1. Check the name and address: the scope must name the factory, not a sister company or an agent.
  2. Check the dates: ISO certificates run on three-year cycles with annual surveillance audits.
  3. Check the database: accredited bodies publish verifiable certificate numbers.
  4. Check the report scope: a CE report for one lens type does not cover every model you order.
Certificates are snapshots, not guarantees. Pair them with a factory audit or a trial order before committing to large programs.
