Do eyeglass frames need CE certification?

Update Time:2026/11/6

Most prescription eyeglass frames do not legally require CE certification in the EU, because they are treated as general consumer products rather than regulated devices. Sunglasses and tinted fashion eyewear, however, do need CE marking under the PPE Regulation and EN ISO 12312-1, and safety eyewear has its own stricter requirements. As the importer, you carry the compliance duty, so it pays to know exactly which standard applies to your order.

What CE Testing Actually Covers

For sunglasses, EN ISO 12312-1 checks lens transmittance categories, UV cutoff at 400 nm, and resistance qualities. For metal frames, nickel release is tested against EN 1811 to protect sensitive skin, and REACH restricts substances such as lead and cadmium. Do not assume a supplier's generic "CE" logo proves any of this happened; the marking is only valid with a test report behind it.

Documents to Request Before Shipping

  1. Test report: EN ISO 12312-1 results for the exact lens category you order.
  2. Declaration of Conformity: signed by the importer or manufacturer, listing the standards applied.
  3. Material reports: nickel release for metal parts and REACH screening where relevant.
  4. Marking check: CE logo, category mark, and traceability code applied to the product or packaging.
CE marking rules change over time, and medical claims can move a frame into the EU MDR. Confirm the current requirements with your notified body or compliance advisor before large orders.
